Is medical verification necessary to receive an accommodation?

Updated over 2 months ago

In many cases, yes, medical verification is necessary for an employer to grant a reasonable accommodation. This requirement helps employers ensure that the requested accommodation(s) are valid and tailored to the employee's specific needs.

However, it’s important to note that not all accommodation requests require medical verification. For instance, if the disability or medical condition is obvious or previously known to the employer, additional verification may not be necessary.

Employers should handle medical information with the highest confidentiality and in accordance with applicable laws, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
