Will my employer know the reason for my accommodation request?

Updated over 2 months ago

Generally, your employer will not be informed of the specific details related to your medical condition, disability, or diagnosis. They will only receive information about the accommodation itself, such as the nature of the request (e.g., an ergonomic chair or flexible working hours), your functional limitations, your current experiences and challenges at work (or job impact), and how reasonable accommodation may support you.

While Protected Health Information or PHI is confidential by default, there are exceptions where employers may need to see underlying health information or documentation in extenuating circumstances and will manually request this information when appropriate, and in accordance with privacy laws and ADA confidentiality rules.
